Corline’s IP portfolio further strengthened by EU patent
February 20th, 2012
Swedish company Corline Systems AB, maker and distributor of a proprietary and unique heparin coating technology for use in Regenerative Medicine, has been granted approval for Patent Application EPO No. 06 748 063.2 - 2112 by the European Patent Office.
“With this newly granted EU patent, Corline has secured IP protection for its core Regenerative Medicine technology in a large and important part of the world market. This European patent complements the already approved patents for the US and Australia that we reported on in January 2012. We are delighted to see the evolvement of a strong IP portfolio for our truly unique technology that holds potential to radically improve treatments for patients that may have no viable options in today’s healthcare. A strong IP position is an important tool for us, and our partners, to invest and leverage our technology to the benefit of patients in need”, comments CEO Henrik Nittmar.
The patent is titled ‘Heparin Coating of Biological Tissue’, and covers methods for application and use of the company’s proprietary heparin coating technology for coating all types of biological tissue, such as living cells for transplantation, tissue segments and decellularized tissue matrices.
Corline is developing its technology for use in a multitude of clinical applications in the Regenerative Medicine space, both in partnership with industrial companies from different corners of the world, and together with international research groups in Europe, the US and Australia. A common denominator is that all projects use the same core technology, the one that now has gained improved protection by the newly granted patent applications.
One example of Corline’s internally developed project is the development of its unique heparin coating technology for application to Islets of Langerhans. In this application CHS can attenuate blood mediated inflammation reactions and save valuable donated cells from destruction when transplanted to patients. The Swedish Medical Products Agency has given its approval to start clinical trials for this promising technology.
“We are investing heavily to develop future therapies in Regenerative Medicine based on our core technology. In parallel, we are marketing the technology to several partners in the US and Europe. The newly granted patent is an important foundation for both internal investments and external partnerships, so this is really great news for us.”, concludes CEO Henrik Nittmar.
